ES 380: 21st Century Global Challenges

This is a unique and evolving environmental studies course. My intention is to find the unifying aspects of our unprecedented global challenges -- including climate change, wide-scale poverty in much of the world, and the struggle for human rights -- and to carefully analyze potential solutions. During the course, we will test several ideas. For example, we will evaluate the proposition that the locus of global decision-making is becoming decentralized because of the rise of global civil society.

I will expect a lot of you during this class; if we succeed, you will feel well equipped to consider your own role as an agent of social chance in this complex, challenging century.
